10 years..it’s been 10 years since the release of my favorite Playstation 2 game: Kingdom Hearts 2. I find myself listening to theme songs from the game and playing both 1 and 2 repeatedly. I, like many, have been waiting for the release of this game since the final credits rolled and the final cut scene ended. 10. Long. Years. Then it happened, Square Enix officially announces that Kingdom Hearts 3 is in production.
I cried. I cried so hard.
The emotions didn’t end there. On December 18th, the Kingdom Hearts team released a preview of their newest game, Kingdom Hearts 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, with a sneak peek at Kingdom Hearts 3 on their twitter page (@KINGDOMHEARTS). First thought: “This is the greatest gaming news I could have ever witnessed,” and that’s not even an exaggeration.
Both games look absolutely fantastic. From what I gather with the preview that was given, Final Chapter prologue will contain all the platform games in between 1 and 3 with a high definition remaster. You are able to play as Riku, which is AWESOME!, as well as get back story on Ventus and gang (which if you’re like me and unfamiliar is a HUGE help). The game appears to be running smoothly on current gen systems, and gives hope for the child in me that has been awaiting impatiently that it will get a Game of the Year vote from me. Now, ONTO KINGDOM HEARTS 3!!
Oh my LAWD did Square Enix give us the best teaser ever. While the clip tops out at around one minute in length, it’s just enough time to truly appreciate the game and get an idea of what new features the development team are bringing to the worlds. Sadly, they only show off one world in the teaser, luckily is Tangled! The world looks beautiful. Looks like they took the movie, put it in the game, and dropped Sora and gang in it, which is something that Square seems to be very good at (world design). They added a lot of cool new combat features as well, and introduced us to a new, (as of now) nameless heartless to fight.
They brought back the reaction trigger commands, a personal favorite of mine, and the combat system still flows smoothly. The most interesting addition to the game (in my opinion) is the new targeting reticle. Rather than leaving it with the small gold circle (unlocked) and blue circle (locked), it looks like Square as widened the circle and added 4 triangles around the circle to better aid the gamer in keeping track of which heartless they are attacking. The clip also shows off the new types of aero, fire, and thunder attacks. There’s also a new form of attack that allows you to go to first person and choose multiple targets to reaction trigger attack!
Overall, I give the (in total) five and a half minute trailer a 9/10. It does a great job to get you hooked right from the beginning, and the only take away I can find right now is having to read the subtitles.
It is my understanding that 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue is a PS4 exclusive, while KH3 is multi-platform. As of now, there is still no release date for either games, simply “in production.” Some of us will wait patiently, some of us impatiently!
