What a morning for Nintendo Fans! Today, we were treated to a Nintendo Direct Event –The first one in 5 months– focusing on the 3DS system. While there was some news on the occasional Wii U or Amiibo game or figure, this was very 3DS heavy. Here, we’ll round up what Nintendo talked about today, as well as give you some analysis of the upcoming titles that were announced. Let’s dig right in.
It’s A Mii, Mario!
What would a Nintendo Direct Event be without a little bit of Mario talk? Well, Nintendo announced this morning that their Super Mario creation tool, Super Mario Maker, will be coming to the 3DS! As you may know, Super Mario Maker let’s players create their own Mario world. A couple of kickers: Not all levels created on the Wii U will be compatible with the portable version, and while you’ll be able to share your work with Local Wireless and StreetPass, you won’t be able to upload them to the internet to share with others.

Mario was as a busy man this morning, as the Super Mario Maker was not the only Mario themed game announced. Mario Sports Superstars was introduced to us today! Mario Sports combines soccer, baseball, tennis, and golf and will apparently add horse racing as well. These game modes are playable both offline and online in a variety of modes such as tournaments and mini-games!

Not Just A Sidekick!
Yoshi, affectionately known as Mario and Luigi’s trusted sidekick, has really branched out in recent years. Today, we learned he’ll be teaming up with his old friend Poochy as both are coming to the 3DS in, Poochy & Yoshi’s Woolly World! Originally a Wii U platformer, the 3DS version will have all the levels from the Wii U game. As a bonus, the 3DS will have new levels where the players can take control of Poochy. Yoshi will have the option of new sidekicks as well, as there are some level where Yoshi will team up with 3 Poochy Pups on his adventures.
We also learned that Nintendo will be releasing a wool Poochy Amiibo along with the game. We can’t wait!

A Busy Link
We had a few Legend of Zelda news tidbits today! First, Nintendo revealed that The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword will be coming to the Wii U Virtual Console Store today. Skyward Sword is the “newest” release for the franchise, having been released in 2011 on the Wii. Most thought that it would be ported to the 3DS, seeing as how this was a 3DS event. Unfortunately, that was not the case. It’s important to note that the game is not being ported to the Wii U either, it is just a Virtual Console title. It’s currently available in the eShop for $19.99 USD.
Nintendo also revealed their plans for a Zelda themed Amiibo line today in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Zelda Franchise! The figures include: 8-BIT Link, Link from Ocarina of Time, Toon Link, and Princess Zelda! Of course, all of this is coming on the heels of the news we saw at E3 2016 of the new Zelda entry, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
Amiibo Release Date: December 2nd, 2017 – North America
Some sad news out of Nintendo Direct this morning, Dragon Quest 8 has been delayed until next year. Originally slated to hit the market this year, it’s been pushed into 2017. We did not get a specific date either. With Dragon Quest 7 coming out on September 16th, that will have to tide fans of the franchise over until we hear anything about DQ8. Of course, Japan has had DQ8 for some time now. We’ll keep you up to date on any news.

Action RPG Ever Oasis was given some time in the spotlight today for the first time since it’s E3 reveal. We’ve learned that Oasis will launch in 2017! It’s garnered attention for its traditional RPG gameplay and it’s day/night cycle that effects gameplay. Ever Oasis comes from the same studio that gave us The Legend of Zelda: Tri-Force Heroes.

Here is some news that will surely excite the Nintendo faithful! Pikmin, in pure side-scroller form, will be coming to Nintendo 3DS in 2017! On it’s live feed this morning, Nintendo said they’ll make good use of the 3DS touch screen, essentially letting the gamer “…tap the screen where you want to throw the Pikmin…” Pikmin was originally released in 2001 for the Nintendo Gamecube to much fan fare. We don’t have an exact day for release quite yet, but we will update you as soon as we hear something.

An update to the 3DS Streetpass Plaza has gamers buzzing today, after Nintendo announced the premium update during today’s Nintendo Direct Event. It was announced that functionality speed will be significantly increased, as well as the number of players visitors increasing from 10 to 100. That’s a relief for gamers who enjoy playing at conventions, gatherings, or just with a large group of friends.
Nintendo also announced today that in addition to the update, five new Streetpass Plaza games will be available for $2.99 USD. One of the new games is free, while the other 4 will then be bundled. The update is already live, so go and check it out!
Nintendo announced Picross 3D Round 2 would be available today in North America! The game is currently live in the marketplace, along with a free demo in the eShop. Round 2 was released in Japan last year, so needless to say, the North American release was much anticipated. Picross 3D is a puzzle game which debuted to the masses in 2009 to great reviews!

Some Pokémon news was revealed today, as Nintendo announced a couple of interesting character related surprises. First, Nintendo announced that Pokemon Sun and Moon players would be able to grab a special edition Munchlax when the game launches. All you need to do is buy the game on release day! Munchlax will have a couple of special moves as well that it otherwise can not learn if you don’t have the special edition character. Hold Back and Happy Hour are moves that will knock opponent HP down to just 1, as well as award you more money for winning battles. I hope nobody “sleeps” on this Pokémon! Yes, I’ll be here all week!
Also revealed was the new Rattata. He will be an Alola dark/normal hybrid. It will undergo a bit of a physical transformation as well, turning Black instead of purple in the Alola variation.
