Paladins: Champions of the Realm is a new objective-based, team first-person shooter from Hi-Rez Studios, the developer of Smith. It is releasing as a free-to-play game for both PC and Mac through Steam, as well as the Xbox One and Playstation 4. Currently it is in open beta, since September 16th, on Steam with no end date has been announced as of yet. Paladins: Champions of the Realm is similar to Battleborn as it combines aspects of both MOBAs as well as first-person shooters. In this game, you take on the role of one of the current 16 available Champions and proceed to capture the point and then push the payload.
The way Paladins combines the MOBA and FPS genres is amazing. You can purchase upgrade cards similar to most MOBAs and also have several abilities depending on your character. These range from things such as grenades, zoomed in sights, a shield, etc. Even for an open beta all of the champions I have currently tried is very smooth and the abilities fit in with the champions extremely well.
In typical MOBA fashion, you start with a set number of champions that can be played as soon as you begin the game. Other champions can be unlocked through in-game purchases or through playing the game and earning coins. So far each character costs around 5,000 in-game currency, this concept is great in our opinion as it allows players who would like to purchase content for the game the ability to do so without holding it against those who don’t. You will also gain lockboxes which will grant you things such as skins, more upgrade cards, and also more in-game coins to purchase skins and characters.
On top of in-game purchases, you may also purchase the Founder’s Pack, which will grant you access to all current and future champions. This will typically cost you $19.99 but is on sale right now for $13.33 until September 30th, 2016. There is a Team Fortress 2 engineer skin for the Paladin’s champion Barik, exclusive to Steam, that can be acquired by first unlocking Barik through one of the methods pictured above and then winning 5 rounds with Barik. There is also exclusive in-game content that may be accessed by liking the game on different social media sites, the exact sites can be found on the official Paladins website.
So far we have been enjoying Paladins: Champions of the Realm a lot here at Playback Gaming.
